Background

Philip Morris USA is the largest tobacco company in the United States. It is owned by Altria.[1]

It owns almost 50% of the US cigarette market. Its brands include Marlboro, Parliament, Virginia Slims, Basic and L&M. The company also manufactures and markets Marlboro Snus, a smokeless tobacco.[2]

Since 2008, Philip Morris USA has been a separate company to Philip Morris International. In 2007, Altria announced that it was going to separate the Philip Morris' US and international operations. According to Associated Press, the move would "clear the international tobacco business from the legal and regulatory constraints facing its domestic counterpart, Philip Morris USA".[3] The spin-off was completed in 2008.[4]
